300 million people worldwide were affected by asthma leading to approximately 250,000 deaths per year in 2009. It is estimated that asthma has a 7-10% prevalence worldwide. In the United States specifically data from several national surveys in the United States reveal the age-adjusted prevalence of asthma increased from 7.3 to 8.2% during the years 2001-2009. The exact cause of asthma isn’t known. Researchers think some genetic and environmental factors interact to cause asthma, most often early in life.
